Me and My Afro

I was recently faced with a dilemma whether to relax my natural hair (Afro) and get a Brazilian (or Indian) weave. You see I’ve been growing my Afro for nearly two years now. So it’s quite long (and increasingly difficult to manage).

I had already contacted  my weave supplier and was about to get the new hairstyle when I looked at my Afro. O No! No! No! This hair is what connects me to so many African women. This hair is what gives me the right to passionately, undoubtedly and loudly declared to the world that “I AM AN AFRICAN!”. Now I’m not saying that weaved up girls don’t have this right as well…. But there’s just something about Afro hair that reminds you of who you are!

So here I am today, proudly wearing my Afro not caring that I may not really fit into Corporate SA because of my hair. It’s good to be an outlier afterall,  right??? Yeah!

First Ever Black Woman on Playboy Cover!

 

Photographer Richard Fegley took this photo of model Darine Stern sitting on a Playboy bunny chair for the October 1971 cover of the magazine. The idea came about when art designer Len Willis decided to create a chair using the famous rabbit head. Stern became the first African-American model to grace the cover of Playboy and the cover has become a classic for the magazine.
